In 1988 while studying abroad in Japan he began studying Yoshinkan aikido at the Honbu dojo. Upon returning to Japan in 1991 he entered the Ryu Mei Kan dojo, a member dojo of the Osaka Buikukai and began studying Aikikai aikido.
While in Osaka he studied Edo Yagyu Shin Kage Ryu directly under the current head of the ryu and also trained in Tennen Rishin Ryu, Niten Ichi Ryu, Shindo Muso Ryu, Bujinkan, and Tai Chi.
He has continued to explore other martial arts as well, including Jun Fan Gung Fu, Kali, Silat, Machado Jujitsu, Muy Thai, and Capoeira.
